Christienne Palmieri has been sewing garments and playing with yarn since she was in 3rd grade. She has worked as a professional quilter, a fabric and craft superstore manager, and a teacher and lecturer on sewing and textiles in California and Illinois. In 2003, she graduated FIDM summa cum laude, a dream she had put away when she first started college in 1982 in favor of a more practical degree: Accounting. She particularly loves to teach children and teens the joys of creation through Fiber Arts. Sewing, knitting, weaving, crocheting, needle-felting, embroidery, and textile manipulation, particularly with recycled materials, are her specialties.
Italiano con Sery Poppins
Sery Poppins
2:00pm–4:00pm
From the instructor: “Buongiorno! I am Sery Poppins and I just arrived at LILA. Like my cousin Mary, I always travel with a suitcase and an umbrella. What’s in my suitcase? All you need to learn the basics of Italian, of course! But rest assured: I don’t travel with worksheets or boring textbooks but with a lot of games and fun activities that we’ll play each week! The magic is that when you play, you don’t even realize that you’re learning.”
Figure Skating
SODE School of Performing Arts
2:30pm–4:00pm
Discover the joy of figure skating at SODE School of Performing Arts! Our new youth beginner figure skating classes are now offered as an exciting after-school activity on Wednesdays for our LILA students at the Burbank campus. Students will learn fundamental skills, build confidence, and have fun on the ice in a supportive environment guided by industry-leading skating coaches. Join us for an enchanting (and refreshing) experience that combines athleticism, artistic expression and fun.
Fiber Arts
Christienne Palmieri
2:00pm–4:00pm
Students will learn the artistic uses of fiber, yarn, and fabric to create traditional and non-traditional pieces of clothing and art. During each class, the students will learn sewing, knitting, weaving, crocheting, or fiber-painting skills, which will be used to create usable, wearable and/or displayable art. Each student will learn how to use a sewing machine. This class is very hands-on and a great way for students of all genders to become more creative, especially with upcycling and repurposing, and to understand more about how things around them are constructed. They will also learn the difference between woven and knit fabrics, and what animals or plants various fibers are made from, and why they are used differently.
Pottery for the Young Maker
Pauline Marchand
2:00pm–4:00pm
This class introduces students to the ancient art of making functional wares as well as art objects. We will learn the many techniques of hand-building and glazing, making class projects as well as our creations. Free creative ideas are encouraged and guided throughout the process. A very fulfilling art.
