Friday, March 17
Dear Athletic Families and Athletes,
MS Basketball
Unfortunately, both our boys’ and girls’ teams didn’t get the desired results during this week’s Play-offs in the Arroyo Sports League. I’d like to remind everyone that last year we were unable to put a girls’ team out on the court so I think that it was fantastic to see a girls’ basketball team showing the way this season with Lion pride. Congratulations to all the players and to Coach Nat who guided the girls. The boys’ team also made great progress under Coach C and assistant Coach Kelle. Well done players and Coaches! Coach C will be leading the Sunday MS league basketball program. If you are interested in joining this team and program, please contact the athletics department directly, it begins this Sunday!
*A friendly reminder that uniforms will need to be returned, washed and cleaned to Zoe in the administrative office.
HS Boys Volleyball
After losing their first 3 Non-League practice warm-up matches, the boys hit the court to WIN their first league match on Tuesday evening defeating NCA 3-0. Congratulations on the first win of the season! It is a hectic jam-packed schedule, you can follow them here.

MS / HS Tennis
A message from the coaches: Halfway through the program, we’d like to give a “State of the Tennis Program”. We’ve had an amazing number of sign-ups this year both in middle school and high school; the majority of which are beginners and intermediate players with a handful on the more advanced side. We are very happy with the progress our beginners and intermediates have made, most of them can now rally together and start having fun playing tennis. Our advanced players have been improving their skills, working on serving and learning (or re-learning) how to properly play a regular game by playing more tennis matches. The beginning of this year has been uncommonly impacted by the wet weather that has delayed the beginning of our yearly LILA tennis tournament but rest assured that it will begin in the upcoming weeks.
In regards to team matches against other schools: Firstly, our high schoolers had a fun meet last month playing Le Lycee Francais but we were a little short on players to play a full-scale team match (we had a mixed team playing a boys’ team). We are planning a meet in April for our middle schoolers. We will try to add more meets if we can arrange them. Secondly, In order to join the CIF tennis program we still do not have the required 10 male players or female players to be able to sign up. We are doing our best to develop a stronger “Tennis Culture” at LILA that will allow us to fill a full team for both boys and girls CIF seasons, so we really encourage players to sign up in the future seasons to allow us to do so (the more advanced players we have the more advanced players are attracted to sign-up). We will have a parent / coach meeting towards the end of the season to talk about this and other tennis-related questions parents might have. Thank you!
MS Table Tennis
The team was in action again for their second round of matches on Wednesday evening playing away at Lycee Francais. In an evenly fought contest, the honors were even 1-1. After losing the first match 5-0, the team fought like lions to claim the second game 3-2! Great job!

HS Boys Basketball
We would also like to congratulate the HS Boys Basketball team who finished 2nd in the International League with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. They played their round one play-off match against Newbury Park Advt this past Wednesday night and although they put up a good fight, could not overcome their opponent.
Coach C. was very proud of them making the play-offs this year given how many freshmen were in the squad. During the 4th quarter, the team showed some Lions fighting spirit to make the score respectable. Basketball will continue to train at Burbank campus until Friday, March 10, the official date of the season concluding. Coach C. will be hosting some camps in April and summer for anyone interested in continuing to develop their skills and techniques.

Girls HS Soccer
On Wednesday, the Girls HS Soccer program made history by competing and representing our school in their first official match against Lycee Francais. They played a solid game versus a team that’s been playing together for a while and is part of a high school league. Hopefully it was the first game of many for this team. If the girls keep the same spirit and enthusiasm this team will do great things in the future. We’re already working on a rematch (this time in Burbank) which will make it easier for family/friends to attend. Thanks to the parents who drove across LA to cheer for the team!
Also: Please don’t forget to sign up your daughter for the soccer spring season! We are also happy to announce that this program will continue through the Spring. Coach Pierre has also invited MS girls soccer players to join the Spring program. If you have any questions about registering, please contact the athletics department directly.

We will endeavor to host matches on the astro turf, however, this may not be guaranteed now that we are moving our permitted times. In the meantime, training will remain on Mondays and Wednesdays next week, the 13th and 15th. We also wish the boys the best of luck in tonight’s first Non-League game of their season against Lycee Francais. Go Lions!

HS Boys Basketball
Message from Coach C: “Hello everyone, this January month was a very intense month. We had most of our league games in January and I am proud to announce that we won 7 games out of 8. Because of the great job that the team has done, we qualified for the CIF playoffs.
The basketball program has grown so much in the school this year, we wish the team good luck for the playoffs. On Monday, January 30, we had a lot of emotions during senior night. We thanked our three seniors ( Alec, Lincoln, and our captain Virgil) for everything they have done for the school and the basketball team. I also want to thank all the parents and volunteers that help us during the games (Nadji, Sofia, Charlie…).”
MS Boys Basketball
Message from Coach C: “Hello everyone, this January month was a very intense month. We had most of our league games in January and I am proud to announce that we won 2 games out of 3. Because of the great job that the team has done, we improved a lot. Our only loss was by 1 point.
The basketball program has grown so much in the school this year, we wish all those players will stay together for a long time. I also want to thank all the parents and volunteers that help us during the games ( Nadji, Sofia, Charlie’s parents…).”
MS / HS Girls Soccer
Message from Coach Pierre: “Hi everyone, The high school girls’ soccer program started last October and our winter session is coming to an end in a few weeks. In order to keep building the team and give everyone an opportunity to join, we decided to keep practicing during the spring season (March to June). We’re also opening the program to all middle school girls who are interested in playing soccer.
Whether you have previous soccer experience or not, you’re welcome to join a few practices and see if you like it. Practices are on Fridays from 4:30pm to 6:00pm at the Ferraro fields. For middle school girls, please coordinate with Mr. Sobol for school transportation to the field. I’m looking forward to seeing new players showing up on Fridays.”
Rugby
Message from new coach Busch below (Former Kenyan Rugby International) who is leading our program for the remainder of the season. We would like to thank coach Omar for what he has done with the squad this season, we wish him all the best in his new endeavors.
“There is much to teach the players being my first tournament. l was just observing and knowing how my players play and l was able to take more notes on things they need to learn and able to put in play. l will be focusing this week on basic Rugby Drills and positioning and individual roles as we progress. The players have much potential in rugby. I believe soon they will be better athletes and will go places.” Coach Busch after round two of the SoCal Youth Rugby league.
Fencing
“En garde! LILA Lions Fencing Team having a fantastic finish at this weekend’s (01/29) SoCal Scholastic League Foil Tournament. Our best finish was from middle school fencer, Sebastian Marean who finished 14th in middle school men’s foil. He lost his top 16 bout to the fencer who was placed number 1 and a D-rated fencer.
Also, the most improvement was shown by Sedgewick Dupart who won his first direct elimination bout ever, 15-6 allowing him to advance to the round of 32. Shout out to Lina Sarbanes for holding it down in Middle School Women’s Foil, which was her first official USFA-sanctioned tournament ever. You rocked it!
In Highschool Men’s foil, Tim Cheung was our top finish for the Lions, finishing 22nd. He won his first direct elimination bout and put up a tough bout against a Harvard Westlake fencer losing 15-8.
We are excited to see what Tim does in the Epee event happening next weekend! Jules Vitet, Sasha Lelievre, and Nikita Shulepov also did some great fencing today. Each fencer implemented coaching advice throughout the day and fought hard. Very proud of our fencers!”

CIF-SS HS International League Update
_
The Boys Basketball Team
(Division 9) have begun their season with two Non-League games. Their first game was against a division 6 opponent who was much stronger. The coach was happy with the spirit in which the game was played and was pleased that many of the freshmen received some valuable game time and experience. Thanksgiving marks the official ending of ALL FALL ATHLETIC PROGRAMS. We are now officially into the Winter season. Please don’t forget to RSVP your attendance to the Athletics Celebration and Awards event to be held in the auditorium on Thursday, December 1 at 4:15pm. There will be NO Fencing during this event, all other regular programs: Basketball and Rugby will continue as scheduled.
Both MS Girls Volleyball and MS Flag-Football finished off their season at Championship last week Monday at the Pilgrim School. The girls were able to take out 3rd position by defeating Waverly and the Flag-Football team improved throughout the season narrowly going down in their last game of the season. Being a brand new program, we are sure that this will continue to develop.
On Monday, November 21, the HS soccer team played against the Burbank staff in a friendly match that drew in a large crowd. This game also marked the end of the soccer season.
All FALL Student-Athletes and families, uniforms must be returned in clean condition by the end of November. A fee will be incurred by December if we have not received it.
Please note that due to the lack of players attending practices, HS GIRLS SOCCER is in danger of being canceled. We understand that with academic scheduling and busy lives around the festive season, attending practices can be challenging. Please be courteous and contact the coach as per our guidelines if you are unable to attend.

CIF-SS HS International League Update
After being crowned Champions for the first time last year, the HS Boys Soccer 11’s team were able to make the Play-offs this season 11/01 with many new players and coaching staff. Although eventually losing 2-0 to rivals Lycee, the boys left everything on the pitch and gave it their all. Despite missing some chances, the players were extremely competitive and will be placed in a great position next season to get the title back.
– Non League games are schedule 11/16; 11/17 &11/21
– Both HOME and AWAY Uniforms need to be washed and returned by the end of the month
– Season officially concludes after final non-league match 11/21
HS Girls Volleyball
On Thursday 10/20 the HS girls volleyball team unfortunately could not progress to the next round of the CIF-SS Division 9 playoff series. We would like to highlight what an achievement it was to even make the playoffs! Last season, our girls battled hard but could not put many wins on the board. Undoubtedly, Coach Leo has taken this group of players with hard work and commitment to a different level and the results showed. We finished top of the Western conference within our league to qualify for a home playoff. This was an amazing achievement and both players and coach deserve the plaudits and congratulations.
– Season has concluded
– Please return uniforms washed and cleaned by the end of the month
– Announcement regarding Volleyball camps to be made soon by the Coach
HS Soccer 7’s
This season, we entered for the first time a HS Soccer 7’s team within the International league. That is a big achievement for the school having two stand alone soccer squads! After playing 10 league matches, the team lost only once and made the Final Championship game on Wednesday, 11/02. Unfortunately, the team was unable to win the match, losing 2-1 in a hard fought encounter with Sequoya. All players left everything on the pitch and gave it their all but came up short. Coach Andi was very proud of the boys this season, our first in this competition.
– Coach Andi will be leaving to France next week
– Players can train with the 11’s squad until Thanksgiving when season concludes
– Please return uniforms washed and cleaned by the end of the month
MS|HS Cross Country
The MS and HS Cross Country Team took another giant step this year under new Coach Andrew Acosta. Please Click Here to read his message to both parents and athletes.
– Season concludes at Thanksgiving Break

MS Arroyo Sports League Update
MS Girls Volleyball and MS Flag Football
MS Girls Volleyball and MS Flag Football are currently in the middle of completing their scheduled league season in the Arroyo Sports league. This is the first time that we have competed in this league with other like minded schools within our district. The format for this league is different in that there is league play to determine a seeding (ranking) followed by a Championship Day where teams will play based on their ranking to determine a league Champion. Both Volleyball and Football teams will be in action on the same day to be played at the Pilgrim School on Monday, November 14.
Times of games will be announced and communicated once the regular league play has concluded. The MS Girls Volleyball team are currently with a 2 wins and 4 loss record while our Flag-Football team (Our first ever in the school’s history) has been fighting in each match and has a standing record of 3 losses. Please mark your calendar to attend Championship Monday, November 14 (afternoon).
– Season concludes after Championship Monday
MS Table Tennis
For the first time in our history, we were also able to enter a MS Table tennis team into the LA Ping Pong League. Unfortunately one of our division opponents was not able to compete, meaning that we had to play both the Pilgrim MS and HS team twice each. At the end of regular league play we had won 5 matches and lost just once! Not bad for our first time in the league. Click Here for more information about the league!
– Play-offs scheduled for mid-November TBA
MS|HS Fencing
The MS and HS Fencing team has also considerably grown since our inaugural season last year competing monthly in the SoCal Youth Fencing League. In the last tournament recently held, Our epeeist, Tim Cheung did his first scholastic league. He won 4 out of 6 of his pool bouts. He kept a good head on his shoulders the entire time despite some minor technical difficulties. He won his first DE bout with a commanding lead (15-3), and went on to fence the 15th seed. He earned 7 great touches before going home. Tim finished 22nd. All around great day! Official Results Click Here.

HS Fencing Team
This past Sunday on October 2nd, the LILA Lions Fencing Team competed in their first tournament of the year at Chaminade Highschool in West Hills. The event was an individual foil event and they fenced against schools in the SoCal Scholastic League such as Brentwood Highschool, Chaminade Highschool, Harvard Westlake, and many more! The Lions had representatives in both the middle school and high school events.
For some of our athletes this was their first tournament ever. Several of our fencers won their first bouts and held their own against several tough highly rated fencers. Some of which are top rated in the region and even in the country. Students fenced in preliminary pool bouts where they took on coaching advice really well and implemented it immediately. All of our fencers advanced into the direct elimination rounds where they fought hard and scored some phenomenal touches. All of our fencers had a great attitude and are ready for their next events! Excited to see our fencing team take the next step into competitive fencing! Go Lions!
MS Table Tennis
Our Table Tennis team was also in action on Wednesday evening for the very first time in our school’s history against Pilgrim school! This is another proud achievement for our school. What is more impressive is that we won the match 3-2! Well done boys.
MS Girls Volleyball Competition Team
The MS Girls Volleyball team played their second match and also just narrowly lost 2-1. Keep fighting girls.
MS Cross Country Team
The MS Cross Country team in their second meet of the season also impressed again with some terrific performances. The coach was very proud of all the athletes.

HS Girls Volleyball
Under new Coach Leo the team has hit the court with multiple games and a tournament. The girls have lost all 6 Non-league games but have won all 3 league games. This has placed them in a solid position to make the play-offs with 4 league games remaining. This past weekend, the girls competed in the Karri Kirsch FS Classic tournament held at Providence High School. On Friday the girls lost 2 matches and won one which placed them into the Silver bracket. On Saturday, the team won both their matches handing them the Silver bracket! Congratulations team!
HS Boys Soccer 11’s
The defending champions under new Coach Johan have started off their league season with a win against last year’s finalist San Gabriel 5-0. However, during the non-league warm-up games, the boys came up against some stiffer opponents losing to rivals Lycee. They have a hectic schedule ahead with 6 league games to be played before the play-offs in early November. Good luck Champs.
HS Soccer 7s
For the first time in our school’s history, we have entered a 7’s team in the CIF International league section. The team under inaugural coach Andi is undefeated with two wins and a tie. With 7 games left in the regular season, the team is well placed to make the play-offs. Well done team.
MS Girls Volleyball
The girls were undefeated last year and this season they are playing in a new league, the Arroyo Sports League with new coach Sinia. In a closely contested first match, the girls went down 2-1 to Pilgrim school. Due to a postponement, the team has a heavy fixture list in the month of October. Let’s go girls!
MS|HS Cross Country
The team competed in their first meet on Tuesday, the 27th. Under the tutelage of new Coaches AJ and Natalie, the team has been running hard and the results paid off with multiple runners posting up some very competitive times for their division.
We also need to mention the incredible effort of some of our runners. In the Boys Division One, Pierre-Ange Petit finished 8th and Marley Best 14th. Girls Division One was amazing. Eva de Andrade finished 4th and Remi Morrison caught the race leader in the final fifty meters to win the race! Well done team, fantastic effort! This is an exciting year for the program as the team has 9+ meets on the calendar. Go Runners Go!
