Athletics Announcements for 2021-22

Please continue to visit this page to see recent announcements from our athletics department for the 2021-2022 year. Go Lions!

Thursday, June 2, 2022

This will be the last edition of the LILA Lions Corner before we break for the summer. We will, however, send out another message from our coaching team later next week as we will be introducing them via video.

We would like to remind you that sign-ups for next year are officially open! If your child is interested in joining a LILA Lions team, please visit our sign-up page and fill out this form today. Be sure to read the full details regarding sign-ups, tryouts, and registration. We are looking forward to kicking off the new school year with new coaches, closer practice facilities, and to strengthening our programs further. By signing up early, you will help us in our planning and transportation coordination.

We have also finalized permits for both the St. Bellarmine’s gym and John Ferraro Sports Fields for next year! We will have access 3-5 days per week, from 4:00pm-6:00pm, starting in August and move to 5 days per week in mid-October. Regarding transportation, we are also looking to secure services with a bus company that will be able to transport our players to each venue 5 days per week. Please note that our pickup policy will remain the same (there will be no bus or transportation returning to the Burbank campus). Pickup will be from either the gym or soccer field at 6:00pm.

Last Friday evening, the AJ Ramseyer ’14 Annual Memorial Alumni Game, between the current high school boys’ basketball team and alumni players, took place in front of a large crowd of spectators. In what was a close and entertaining match, the alumni were victorious, running out winners 50-40. Thank you to everyone involved in making this a successful event. We hope to continue this tradition next year.

The middle school boys’ soccer team made the playoffs, finishing in 5th position, and they defeated 3rd placed KIPP 3-2 in a tightly contested game. The team advanced to the next round of the finals, playing 1st ranked team CNCA in their division.

This week from Monday, June 6 – Friday, June 10, the athletics department will be collecting gently used athletic equipment (in great or like new condition) in clearly-marked bins near the drop-off area. Please refer to Mosaïque for our wish list items.

Remember to save the date for our semester 2 athletic awards celebration on Monday, June 13 at 4:30pm. The following teams will be recognized: middle school boys’ soccer, high school rugby, middle and high school tennis, middle and high school track & field, high school boys’ volleyball, and middle and high school boys’ basketball. Please click here to RSVP before Wednesday, June 8. If you have any dietary restrictions, please email or leave a comment with your RSVP.

Please be advised that this event is the same day as prom. Any players attending prom can pick up certificates/awards the following day, Tuesday, June 14.

Our LILA Lions fencing team will join the SoCal Scholastic Fencing League. In this league, fencers will compete in foil against several other schools in the Southern California region. Some of the schools in the league include Brentwood, Chaminade, Harvard-Westlake, Oakwood, and many more! Fencers will compete in either mens’ or womens’ individual foil events throughout the year, and then, based on individual results, will qualify to do team events later in the season. All students will also be eligible to fence in any United States Fencing Association events on a local, regional, and national level. We are so proud of the team who have put in tremendous work this year to learn the foundation of fencing and are excited to put our skills to the test in a competitive league. Any students interested in jumping in on the next season are more than welcome! The team will be structured with beginner and advanced groups, making sure every fencer feels included in the training process. Beginner fencers will still be able to participate in the league in the beginner tournaments offered. Looking forward to 2022-2023! En garde!

The athletics department is excited to be launching an esports team for middle and high school next school year, starting in the fall. If your child is interested, please contact the athletics department directly. Please note that a requirement for joining the team is that each player must have their own console and gaming equipment.

The middle school boys’ soccer team is well into their season, with two wins and two losses. They have three more games to play and will need to win at least two of three to qualify for the playoffs. Let’s go, LILA Lions!

FIYA D-1 soccer playoffs will be held starting Tuesday, May 31 and will conclude no later than Wednesday, June 8. More details about the schedule and the number of qualifying teams will be emailed shortly. For now, please plan to be available during that period as schedule requests will be very difficult to accommodate. We do, however, understand that this is a busy time of year so if you have graduation ceremonies or other similar academic end-of-year events during that time, please let us know and we will do our best to schedule around them.

Last Saturday, the fencing team enjoyed a day out at the Swordplay fencing studio. Fencers had a great time and finished off the day with a pizza party to end the season.

Please read the following updates about next season and recent achievements from our LILA Lions.

Parent Survey
What a fantastic year! There have been so many wonderful moments and achievements for our LILA Lions this school year. As we approach the last day of school, we would be grateful if you would take a few minutes to complete this parent survey. Your feedback is invaluable, as we work to continue building our upcoming season and our department as a whole. Please submit complete the survey before Wednesday, June 15.

Gently Used Equipment Drop-Off
During morning drop-off from Monday, June 6 – Friday, June 10, we will be collecting gently used athletic equipment (in great, or like new condition). Thank you for avoiding any equipment that is in poor condition and/or requires repairs. Please refer to this list for our most-needed items: Any size soccer/footballs | Any size basketballs | Any size volleyballs | Rugby balls | Equipment storage bags | Tennis rackets | Fitness equipment (dumbbells, barbells, etc.) | Track & field equipment.

Any equipment that exceeds the department’s needs will be used by the Burbank campus for students’ enjoyment during recess and lunch. If there is an item you would like to contribute that is not listed below, please contact the athletics department directly. Thank you for your support!

Middle School Boys’ Soccer
The middle school boys’ soccer team is back to winning ways after beating KIPP LA handsomely at our home ground, John Ferraro Athletic Fields. Congratulations, team, and good luck for the remainder of your games this season. We will confirm each game’s location prior to the match.

New Facility
We have been able to secure a new gym for 2022-23! The location is only a 10-minute drive from the Burbank campus and is in excellent condition in a safe area with secure parking. Please note that the gym will be prioritized for each athletic program in season. For example, the girls’ volleyball team that plays league matches in the fall will be prioritized in the fall, and so on.

Updates for Next Season
For next year, we will be transitioning our larger sport teams from year-round play to seasonal play. This means that we will only be holding certain sports in certain seasons. For example, volleyball will train and play in the fall, while basketball will train and play in the winter.

Please note that smaller sports (i.e., tennis, fencing) will still be offered year round.

There will be two types of registrations for next year: squad and training. We will be holding a tryout week from Monday, August 29 – Friday, September 2 (schedule will be released prior to summer break). Players selected for the squad will need to register and pay under the squad option. Those who do not make the team but would still like to participate and train (due to numbers playing in non-league games) with the squad for the semester can register and pay under the training option. All payments will be done via SCO.

Registration for fall semester 1 will open prior to summer break and payments will be due before Monday, September 5.

Hello LILA Parents,

Welcome back from spring break. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable time! In this edition of the Athletics Corner, we will recap the Athletics celebration event that was held for semester 1, look at what is happening now, and provide an insight into future planning for next year! Please also view these coaching opportunities for next year (we would highly appreciate your assistance in sending this to anyone in your networks that may be interested in coaching), along with some key statistics from semester 2.

Before the break, we successfully held our first ever athletics celebration ceremony. We had a fantastic turnout given the hot conditions, and coaches were able to say a few words and hand out certificates. Our LILA Lions mascot also made an appearance and was on hand to unfurl the championship banners to both the middle school girls’ volleyball and high school boys’ soccer teams. Thank you to Libby for arranging the cold refreshments and popsicles for the players at the end; they were needed!

Click here to see the photos of the day.

Middle School Boys’ Soccer Update
Great news! We have been able to change the location for the majority of our upcoming games. The team will be playing most of their games at John Ferraro Park (10 minutes from campus), at a start time of 4:00pm. LILA will provide transportation to the game, but parents need to pick up at the park. There is one game that will be at Amino Legacy on Wednesday, May 11 at 4:00pm. For this game, LILA will provide transportation to the game, however parents must pick up from the game. View the revised soccer schedule here.

High School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Update
Since we are now sharing the John Ferraro field with the middle school boys’ soccer team, from Wednesday, May 4 through the end of the season, all Wednesday practices will be held on campus. Friday practices will still be at John Ferraro, with the exception of Friday, May 13, on which date practice will be on campus. Otherwise, Wednesday practices are the only ones that will be held on campus.

Upcoming Middle School Track & Field Meets
Please refer to this schedule for the next track & field meets. Please email Coach Faizal or Coach Loredana directly if you have any questions or concerns.

Updates for Next Year
There will be two types of registrations for next year: squad and training.

Registration for fall semester 1 will open prior to summer break and payment will be due before Monday, September 5.

For all high school student-athletes, we will have a nurse on site to complete your physicals during the first week of school in August. Remember for next year: no physical, no play.

We have been able to secure a new gym for 2022-23! Location and details will be made available once the final contract has been signed and approved by both parties. The location is only a 10-minute drive from the Burbank campus and is in excellent condition in a safe area with secure parking. We are looking at obtaining a lease at this stage for 4 out of the 5 weekdays (the other day is already unavailable). Please note that, once secured, the gym will be prioritized for each athletic program in season. For example, the girls’ volleyball team that plays league matches in the fall will be prioritized in the fall, and so on.

For any questions or concerns, please email Andrew Sobol or Zoe Godfrey-Grinage.

Hello LILA Families,

Please read the following on the past month’s achievements of our LILA Lions teams.

Athletics Awards Celebration
Before spring break the Athletics Department hosted the first Athletics Celebration event of the year. After having had to postpone the event originally scheduled for January, the student-athletes, coaches, parents, and faculty and staff were greeted with extreme hot weather! Nonetheless, athletes who participated in a fall program received their certificates, and both the middle school girls’ volleyball and high school boys’ soccer teams unveiled their championship banners (that are already hanging in the lobby!) and were presented with their medals and the league trophy. Special thank you to Lionel the LILA Lion who made a guest appearance, our facilities team members, and Libby who handed out much-needed cool drinks and popsicles at the end of the event. We hope to make this an ongoing tradition and will be hosting semester 2 awards on Monday, June 13. View photos of the celebration here.

Middle and High School Fencing
Congrats to the LILA Lions fencing team on completing their first fencing tournament of the semester against Swordplay LA. Led by Coach Jacob and Coach Dan, this was a first tournament for several of the students of the program with many great touches and a lot of learning. The students competed in foil which is a thrusting weapon with a limited target including chest, torso, and back. In order to score a touch, fencers must successfully hit the target with uninterrupted forward momentum or block their opponent’s attack with a parry riposte. All students have demonstrated a great foundation of the basics and put their skills to the test, winning several of their initial pool bouts and even winning some first round direct elimination bouts against some tough opponents! Students will be at it again with another tournament in the coming weeks! Great fencing and en garde!

Middle School Boys’ Soccer
The middle school boys’ soccer team have begun their season with one win and one loss. With multiple matches being scheduled after spring break at the John Ferraro Sports Complex, the boys should be set up to make a run for the playoffs.

High School Boys’ Volleyball
Congratulations to the high school boys’ volleyball team who completed their league season on Monday evening. Unfortunately, a playoff position was not achieved, however, with hard work over the off season, Coach believes the boys have what it takes to get back on track next year.

Training will resume for the remainder of the semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Players, please return your uniforms before the end of April.

Take a look at our championship banners and trophies for our middle school girls’ volleyball and high school boys’ soccer teams.

Friday, April 8, 2022

The middle school boys’ soccer league season is underway, with the team playing in their second match this afternoon. We are also working hard with the league to move some of our matches in May to John Ferraro Sports Complex. The athletics department is also working on obtaining a large bus for the remainder of the season to avoid any need for carpooling.  Stay tuned on these action items.

Although they lost their past few matches, the high school boys’ volleyball team has vastly improved and been extremely competitive. The team will miss out on this year’s playoffs, but the coach has confidence that if the team sticks together and practices throughout the off-season, they will show even further improvement next year.

The track and field coaches have sent out a spreadsheet with the upcoming meets. Please mark your child’s availability before the due dates.

Please mark your calendars for these upcoming dates:

> There will be a matchup between the high school boys’ basketball team and LILA faculty/staff members on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:15pm.

> The beloved AJ Ramseyer 14′ Memorial Alumni Game is scheduled for Friday, May 27. More details will be shared soon.

> The Semester 2 Athletics Celebration is scheduled for Monday, June 13. Parents are welcome to attend the celebrations for the following teams: basketball, rugby, boys’ volleyball, tennis, and track & field.

Thursday, March 31, 2022

Last Thursday, our high school boys’ volleyball team got their first win of the season against NCA! Having trailed by as many as 10 points, the boys fought back in the third set, eventually sweeping their opponent 3 sets to 0! Let’s hope the team can use this result and confidence as a springboard for the remainder of the season. Playoffs are still possible if they win 3 out of their last 4 league matches.

The middle school boys’ soccer team won their first game of the season 6-0 on Wednesday. It was a strong display from the team and hopefully they can carry this form throughout the rest of the season. Here’s a recap from the coach: “Special mentions to Hal who scored the first goal in the first few minutes of the game and to Eugene who played a great game. Sevak scored three goals! Armand held down the center of the field and he was instrumental in the victory.”

On Tuesday evening, the high school boys’ basketball team played in a friendly match against a seasoned CIF opponent in Anaheim. Playing scrimmages against higher ranked opponents within our Southern Section has given our coaching staff a clear indication of where they would like to take the program. The coaches have a summer program outlined for the squad. Any players interested should contact Coach Corneille before the end of April.

Let’s go LILA Lions!

Thursday, March 24, 2022

The middle school boys’ soccer league season commences next week, kicking off on Wednesday, March 30. All families will receive a detailed email outlining the logistics (uniforms, transportation, etc.) and coaches’ expectations for the season. The final round of matches will be played toward the end of May. We wish all of the players the best this season!

The high school boys’ volleyball team is now well and truly into their league campaign as we approach the halfway point of the season. So far, the boys have fought hard but have lost all 4 games. The coach asks that all players stay focused and says that, with hard work at practice, the results will start to come their way. Good luck to the squad for the remaining 5 fixtures.

Please remember that parents are allowed to watch at most venues as long as they are masked.

The middle school track & field coaches recently purchased some new equipment. Next week, the team will practice with shot puts and javelins (all safely approved for school use).

Semester 2 is well underway, and we would like to officially congratulate the high school boys’ basketball team who made the first round of the CIF playoffs in Division 5 prior to February break. Well done to all players and coaching staff. A special thank you to the parents who volunteered during the season.

Congratulations also to our high school rugby team who completed their first ever season in the Southern California High School Rugby league! It was our very first time having LILA lions represent our school on this stage. Everyone did an amazing job, and we thank our parent volunteers. We hope to build on this program next year.

The middle school boys’ basketball season is currently in session and will be concluding at the end of the month. We wish both the red and blue teams the best of luck for their remaining games.

Dear Parents,

The end of January and beginning of February marks the transition from the end of semester 1 to the beginning of semester 2. A reminder that if you haven’t done so already, register now before registrations close this week. We officially begin semester 2 on Monday, January 31.  For this update, I have created headings that highlight specific information that I have deemed important. During the month of February, I will be taking personal paternity leave for the birth of our second child. In my absence, coaches have been briefed on their responsibilities and any administrative questions may be directed to Zoe. I can still however be contacted for any urgent matters during this leave of absence.

Current Seasons: High School Boys’ Basketball, Rugby 7’s, Fencing

The high school boys’ basketball team has completed half of their scheduled games with the remaining matches to be completed by the beginning of February (see their schedule here). With a record of 3 wins and 3 losses the boys are on course to qualify for the playoffs. Please reach out to coach Jerome or coach Cornelius if you have any questions.

The rugby 7’s team has completed round 3 of their season with 4 weeks left to play (see their schedule here). We are extremely proud to have launched this program in such a short period of time and are very excited about where this program is headed. The boys have shown great determination and look fantastic in their new uniforms!

Our fencing team completed their 3rd tournament yesterday on Sunday. This program is also growing quickly and both players and parents need to be congratulated for attending each tournament on a weekend.

I would also like to thank the coaches for their hard work during this challenging season with illness, postponements, and access to training facilities. Your dedication to our student-athletes is commendable.

Upcoming Season

The middle school boys’ basketball season for the red and blue teams commences this week (see their schedule here). Please note:  players are required to have registered for semester 2 in order to play in the league. Good luck to all the players, parents, and coaches involved. An email has been sent outlining the spectator policy for each gym involved in our league and we respectfully ask that you abide by the policies. Please note that middle school teams will not have access to the vans and instead we ask that you take your child directly to each game. The coaches (Team Red: Coach Musa; Team Blue: Coach Kelle) and Zoe can work with you if you need assistance with carpooling.

The season for high school boys’ volleyball commences in early March (see their preliminary schedule here) and only those players who have returned their CIF forms are eligible to play. Please note: players are required to have registered for semester 2 in order to play in the league. We are also working on obtaining a local gym to be able to host matches. Confirmation will be made prior to the season in regards to the gym (currently we have about a 50/50 prospect to be given access).

The middle school boys’ volleyball program will be run in the springtime but is in danger of not proceeding due to low enrollment numbers. We are currently need a minimum of 6 more players to qualify.

Postponements

The fall athletics celebration event has been pushed back to a date yet to be determined after February break.

Changes to Middle and High School Girls’ Volleyball for the Spring

Unfortunately, Coach Leydy will be leaving our school at the end of this week. We thank her for her time with both the middle and high school girls’ volleyball teams during the fall. Given the timing of her departure, any high school girl volleyball players who have already registered for semester 2 and wish to continue training may do so with the boys on Tuesdays and Thursdays with coach Gurpreet. Until such time as a replacement can be found we will limit the number of high school girl participants to the first 10 who register for semester 2. Coach Gurpreet will also be taking over and leading the middle school training sessions on Fridays.

Athletics Committee

In the last edition of Mosaïque, we posted about forming a parent athletic committee. Currently, we have had two parents who have indicate an interest in joining. We need a minimum of 4; ideally it would be great to have 1 parent from each athletic program. The committee will meet once per month to update and discuss all topics related to the LILA Lions athletics program for this current year while planning for the next few years.

Wednesday, January 5, 2022

Dear Parents,

Firstly, I wish you all a happy new year 2022 and I hope that you enjoyed the winter break! Secondly, as you are already well aware, the new wave of COVID-19 Omicron has affected our return from break (practices, games and events), and I will address those issues first before giving a brief outline for what is to come in January and semester 2 (registrations will open this coming Monday, January 10).

At this stage, we are working with the school leadership team on a daily basis, and I can confirm that all practices will continue as scheduled for the remainder of semester 1 as planned (semester 1 concludes Friday, January 28); this includes the first week back to school barring yesterday. Below is a brief recap of how we will proceed during this current wave:

  • All players and coaches must be wearing masks at all times, even outside.
  • All players will be required to wear masks, even during outdoor scrimmages.
  • All external coaches and vendors must provide a negative COVID-19 test result at the beginning of each week.
  • The Athletics Department will be strictly following LILA’s and the County’s COVID-19 guidelines. If there is a clash with any leagues or schools that we play with, our school policy takes precedence.
  • If there is a change, cancellation, or postponement to any match, we will do our best to contact you ASAP and to reschedule with the league and opposing school if possible. Please see links to each respective team schedule at the bottom of this letter.
  • For basketball, there is now a no spectator policy, unless communicated otherwise.
  • The Mount Olive Gymnasium has also confirmed that we will not be able to rent their facility at this time. I have been told to inquire again in late March. Hopefully we can have some good news on this front so that our high school boys’ volleyball team has an indoor location in which to practice and train.

We have also decided to postpone the Fall Awards Celebration that had originally been scheduled for next Thursday, January 13. When it is safe to do so (the ability to take photos without a mask outside, serving food, etc.), a new date will be announced for the spring. In the meantime, we will host an outdoor assembly for students at the end of the month to present each participant with their certificate and unveil the championship banners for the high school boys’ soccer team and middle school girls’ volleyball team.

On a positive note, we have launched the school’s first ever high school Rugby 7’s program and the team will be competing in their first round of matches this Friday! Well done to all the players who have been training and preparing over the break. We also wish our middle school boys’ basketball teams (Red and Blue) the best of luck in their upcoming season that starts next Thursday, January 13. Due to the backlog of high school boys’ basketball games, the shuttle vans will not be available for middle school and we ask that you either take your child directly to the gym after school, or we can assist in carpooling. I would also like to congratulate our fencing athletes and their coaches who participated in their second event of the year just before the winter break. We are working to arrange a master class with a French fencing master in April, so please stay tuned!

Important Information Regarding Semester 2 Registrations

Semester 1 officially ends on Friday, January 28 (payments made from the beginning of the school year for semester 1); this marks the halfway point of the school calendar in terms of weeks (approximately 16 weeks for each semester).

As stated in my welcome email at the beginning of the school year, being the new athletics manager, the structure of the athletics programming would not change from the past. In other words, all sporting programs would run all year round and be split into two semesters. What does this actually mean? For example: High school girls’ volleyball and high school boys’ soccer completed their league matches in November. However, we plan to offer training sessions during semester 2. Vice versa for high school boys’ volleyball. Their league play doesn’t commence until spring; however, training commenced in September, during the fall season. The school will be looking to change this system next year, to align ourselves with all other schools in CIF at the high school level. A parent survey will be sent out at the end of the school year regarding this question.

Registration and payments for Semester 2 will begin on Monday, January 10.

Semester 2 will formally commence on January, Monday 31. The semester 2 practice schedule is available below.

Many parents have only recently registered for programs that will begin league play in the spring (such as high school boys’ volleyball). Please contact us directly if this is the case. Though we can’t confirm days and times yet, please note that there will be changes to the following programs, either due to coach schedules or field permits:

  • High school boys’ and girls’ soccer
  • High school and middle school girls’ volleyball

If you are considering having your child stop participating (in any current winter program currently in league play, such as high school boys’ basketball), after they have completed their season in February, then you do not need to register for semester 2.

Please remember that registration and SCO payment for semester 2 will be available from Monday, January 10 – Friday, January 28. Programs will begin Monday, January 31.

Please feel free to contact the Athletics Department if you have any questions or require further information.

Thank you for reaching the bottom of this letter! We wish all of our players and coaches the best for the month of January!

Next week, there will be no scheduled athletics programs on Friday, December 17.

Dear Parents | Chers Parents,

The month of November was a fruitful one for two of our sporting teams, with both the high school boys’ soccer team and the middle school girls’ volleyball team taking home their respective championships! We also saw some great individual performances from our runners who competed and represented LILA for the first time in the FIYA Cross Country meets. Our high school girls’ volleyball team had an invaluable experience this season that will see them better placed for next year, as they will begin their training camp in summer before regular school commences. We would also like to highlight our fencing program and the team who also competed in their very first event of the year before Thanksgiving (a first for our school: fencing in a formal competition!). A final reminder to all student-athletes to return their uniforms (the high school boys’ soccer team needs to return their white kit).

Finally, on the last day of the month, our high school boys’ basketball team started their league season with a win over our crosstown rival Le Lycée Français! Good luck to the team for the month of December; they have a number of games scheduled before winter break. Please note that we will communicate with parents ahead of time regarding to the spectator policy of each venue that we will play in.

All of our fall league (listed below) will be formally congratulated in mid-January on campus. Further details regarding the day and times, along with COVID-19 policies and restrictions, will be communicated after the upcoming winter break.

  • High school boys’ soccer
  • High school girls’ volleyball
  • High school and middle school coed cross country
  • Middle school girls’ volleyball
  • Fencing team that competed

Moving into December, we are currently still trying to recruit more players for the following programs who will start their league match campaigns in January after winter break.

  • High school boys’ Rugby 7’s (new program!): currently at 7 players and ideally we need 10 on the squad. We already have confirmed registration of the team in the SoCal Youth Rugby league.
  • Middle school girls’ basketball: currently at 6 players and ideally we need 10 on the squad. We already have confirmed registration of the team in the FIYA Division 1 LA Girls’ Middle School league.
  • Middle school boys’ volleyball: currently we have 4 interested players and we need a minimum of 10 to register the team in the league.

Our high school boys’ basketball team commenced their season on Tuesday night in a tight contest against Le Lycée Français. Our Lions ended the game with a 41-38 victory! You can keep up with the team’s schedule here as they take on Southwestern and Le Lycée Français again next week. Good luck, team!

We are still looking for more players to join our middle school girls’ basketball team! Games begin in late January, so there’s still plenty of time to join and start practicing.

We are also still recruiting players for our high school boys’ rugby 7’s. No background in rugby is necessary! Practice for the month of December is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Victory Park from 6:30pm-8:30pm. In January, Tuesday practices will switch to Mondays at John Ferraro Athletic Fields from 4:15pm-5:45pm. Matches begin Friday, January 7! We will have new uniforms for the team, specially designed by the players.

Middle school boys’ volleyball registrations are still open! We still need at least 6 more players in order to meet the league minimum for team registration. Please contact the athletics department if you would like to register your child.

Early next year, we will be celebrating the end of the fall season for high school boys’ soccer, high school girls’ volleyball, high school coed cross county, middle school girls’ volleyball, and middle school coed cross country. The celebration is tentatively scheduled for mid-January, with a date, time, and further details to be confirmed when school resumes after winter break.

Our middle and high school fencing team represented the school for the first time in a formal match against Polytechnic School on Sunday, November 21. According to Coach Dan, the event was an outstanding success for the program’s first-ever competition: “Our (many!) victories as well as the losses throughout the day should be appreciated within the context that our team has been fencing for only two months! Needless to say, we have a lot to be proud of, and I’m excited to see what happens when we face off against them again next month.

It was a long day of fencing, with our program broken up into two teams of three that all squared off against every other fencer in the room, round robin style, according to the NCAA/collegiate format.

Despite being against a larger team full of athletes who were several years older and had years of experience, LILA fencers had a very impressive showing and won roughly one third of their bouts while getting valuable competition experience that will carry them through the rest of their careers. Special kudos also goes to squad captains Alexis and Morgan for helping keep their squads organized and motivated throughout the day.”

Well done, LILA fencers!

Our high school boys’ basketball team will soon be starting their league matches in the CIF-SS International League. We wish them all the best under Head Coach Lafont.

Our middle school basketball team will commence league play in late January.

Our high school rugby program is also underway! Our players will be training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they will be competing in the SoCal High School Youth Rugby league from January 7 – February 25. If you are still interested in joining the team, please email the athletics office.

Middle school boys’ volleyball registrations have opened. We need a minimum of 5 more players to register a team for the spring league. Please contact the athletics office if you would like to register your child.

Registration Info for South Pasadena Tiger Run

Due to current COVID-19 and cohort policies, LILA will not be able to enter official school teams into this year’s South Pasadena Tiger Run. We hope to be back next year!

For this year, interested families are invited to register themselves (adults and children) directly. We have secured a limited promo code – valid for the first 70 participants only – to save families $7 off the 5K or 10K registration (including virtual option). Sign up here and use promo code LILA2021 to take advantage of this special offer. If you have any questions about the event, please email race organizer Jose Zavala directly.

Wednesday, November 17, 2021

Good luck to our fencers who will be participating in LILA’s first-ever electrical foil event this Sunday, November 21! It is never too late to join the fencing program; after this match we still have two more planned for the year. Go, fencers!

Registrations have opened for middle school boys’ volleyball! Students, please contact Mr. Sobol or visit his office to indicate your interest. Practice will begin in early February, with the season to start in late March.

We are still looking for 2-3 more players to join our middle school girls’ basketball team! Please contact Mr. Sobol or Coach Corneille if you are interested in playing this season. No prior experience is necessary; our coaches will get you up to speed.

Attention all players on the high school boys’ basketball team! Please be sure to return your required documentation without delay; you will not be eligible to play in the league without these documents. Our first game of the season will see us face off against Le Lycée Français on Tuesday, November 30. View the full schedule here.

We are planning to host a celebration for our fall season teams (middle and high school girls’ volleyball, high school boys’ soccer, and cross country) on Friday, January 14. More details to follow shortly.

Tuesday, November 16, 2021

We’re proud to announce that our middle school girls’ volleyball team won their final match tonight, earning themselves the title of undisputed Champions of the Division 1 FIYA league for 2021! They won eight straight matches in a row! Well done, Lions and coaches!

A special thank you to all the parents who assisted in transportation this season. We hope that this time next year spectators will be allowed indoors to cheer on our teams!

Thursday, November 11, 2021

Congratulations to the high school boys’ soccer team who were crowned champions of their CIF Southern Section International League this afternoon!

The boys prevailed in a tight match, defeating San Gabriel Academy 4-1. After ending the first half 0-0 in a tightly fought contest in hot weather, the team scored two quick goals to give themselves a cushion. San Gabriel managed to reply shortly afterwards to make the score line 2-1. However, the Lions held their nerve and composure by scoring another two goals to seal the victory!

Well done to all of the players involved in the season, to the coaching staff (Coach Roman Chaponot), and to all of the parents, students and administrators of the school who attended the final. The atmosphere was electric, especially once that final whistle was blown!

Congratulations, Lions!

Wednesday, November 10, 2021

On Tuesday, our high school boys’ soccer team played in the semifinal match against Pilibos and were victorious in a close encounter. They won 2-1, with the second goal coming in extra time to send the Lions through to the final yesterday.

The middle school girls’ volleyball team is currently undefeated, having won seven straight matches! Well done, Lions, and congratulations on qualifying for the finals! The remaining league matches will be played next week before finals begin.

Attention all middle school girls! We are still looking for 3-4 more participants to join our basketball team. We have already registered the team to play in the upcoming winter league and we want you to join the squad! No prior experience is necessary; our coaches will get you up to speed. If you are interested, please contact Mr. Sobol.

Our first high school rugby session was held this week. Our goal is to create a viable rugby program this year so we can enter a 7’s team into the local high school rugby league. If successful, we will look to expand the program to the middle school level next school year. Any interested players should contact Mr. Sobol. Training dates will be announced after the first tryout session.

Our newly launched fencing program has been a success, and we are always looking to add members to the squad. The team’s first tournament play will be held on Sunday, November 21. We are excited to see this program grow and wish our competitors all the best in their first bout!

The fitness and weights room is now open for high school student-athletes! However, we have very few returned waivers. To use the fitness room, student-athletes must have a completed waiver. We will be training every Monday and Wednesday, starting at 4:10pm, under the tented area near the basketball court at the back of campus.

Tuesday, November 2, 2021

Our high school boys’ basketball schedule is now available here. Go Lions!

Wednesday, October 27, 2021

High school girls’ volleyball uniforms need to be washed and returned by next Friday, November 5. A $50 fee will be charged for any uniform that is not returned.

Congratulations to the high school boys’ soccer team who qualified for the league playoffs. The date of your first finals match will be given to you by your coach once the league has fixed the day and time sometime next week.

Next Monday, we will be opening SCO registrations for a new program: Dance & Zumba for high schoolers, starting on Wednesday, November 10. The program will be led by Coach Sosa and will conclude on Wednesday, January 26 (the end of semester 1). For more information, please contact Athletics Manager Andrew Sobol directly.

We are also in the process of launching a high school rugby program. The department is currently working with the Pasadena Rugby Club with the aim of placing a Rugby 7’s boys’ and girls’ team for the 2022 season. Training will commence as soon as a coach has been hired. If successful, we will then look to launch a middle school touch rugby (non-contact) program. Please note that at this stage, it will be open to boys and girls. Our goal is to have both a boys’ and girls’ 7’s team competing in the SoCal High School Rugby league by spring 2023. For more information, please contact Athletics Manager Andrew Sobol directly.

The department is currently seeking parent volunteers to assist with the high school basketball program, specifically a scorer and scoreboard operator for all home games, starting in December. If you are interested, please contact Athletics Manager Andrew Sobol directly.

Middle school boys’ volleyball league play takes place in the spring. Boys in 6th-8th grade who are interested in playing are invited to visit Athletics Manager Andrew Sobol to register their interest, or may ask their parents to email Mr. Sobol directly. Training will commence at the start of semester 2 in early February.

We will be officially opening the outdoor fitness and gym room this Friday, October 29 at 4:15pm for high school student-athletes who have returned their completed waivers. The outdoor fitness room is located at the back of campus, near the  volleyball/basketball court.

High School Girls’ Volleyball
Our league season has concluded and, unfortunately, the team did not qualify for the finals. The team will continue to practice twice per week as scheduled until semester one concludes at the start of winter break. Information regarding semester two will be communicated at a later date. Players, please return your uniforms to the athletic office by the end of October. A fee will be applied if not returned neatly.

High School Boys’ Soccer
Our league season has almost concluded. The boys have qualified for finals, to be played in early November. Details regarding match times and locations will be shared once given to us by the league office.

High School Cross Country
On Wednesday, our team competed for the first time against another school directly at Brooke Park. Well done, coach and runners! We hope to schedule more of these meets with other local schools in the future.

Middle School Cross Country
On Wednesday, our team concluded their season. For the first time this season, they competed in three events against other middle schools. Congratulations to all runners, coaches, and parents for assisting and volunteering. We look forward to growing the cross country program next year.

With the winter season approaching, we also have some updates on basketball:

High School Boys’ Basketball
The league season commences in December and will be played until February break. The schedule of matches will be released next week.

Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball
The league season for both boys and girls will begin in January and be played until late March. Details regarding the scheduling of matches will be released by the league in December.

High School Fitness Center
The equipment has been set up and all is ready. At this stage, we only have 10 waivers returned by families to enable their high school student-athlete to use the equipment. Training will begin this coming Monday, October 25 and will run each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Only those student-athletes who have returned this waiver are eligible to use the fitness center.

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

It has been an active time for many of our student-athletes these past few weeks. The sounds of players having fun either on the field or court, cheering at games or while traveling in the van to a contest have again highlighted the importance athletics can play in the lives of our students. Many have made new friends and our department will continue to work with our coaches to focus on values-based education and the life lessons that sports teach.

Our middle school volleyball team has started their season this week, with a first up victory on Tuesday night! Well done, players. Please refer to the game schedule and check in with your coach regarding transportation and location for each game.

Our middle school cross country team was also in action on Wednesday for the first time, representing LILA in an official meet. Times of the runners will be posted and distributed after October break. Congratulations, runners! The next meet will be on Wednesday, October 20 at 4:00pm in Cheviot Hills.

There is a good chance that our high school cross Country team will compete in their first official race as a school team on Wednesday, October 20. More details will be made available after the break.

Both the high school girls’ volleyball and high school boys’ soccer league seasons will be completed soon after October break, with finals taking place in early November. Please remind your child(ren) to return their uniform to the athletics department after the season has been completed. Players will train until Semester 1 concludes in early December.

The athletics department and all the coaches wish all of our participants and student-athletes a safe October break. There will be no practices or matches during this time (Friday, October 8 – Friday, October 15). We look forward to seeing student-athletes refreshed and energized on Monday, October 18.

Following October break, the new fitness room will be open for high school student-athletes only. Currently, only a handful of waivers have been returned. If you would like your child(ren) (high school students only) to use the fitness room, please complete and return this waiver. We also ask that you review the rules with your child(ren) as safety is our number one priority.

Wednesday, September 29, 2021

The high school boys’ soccer season is well underway and our team has made a great start to the season. The boys are in action against the joint top of the table, Le Lycée Français. Good luck, Lions!

The high school girls’ volleyball team has also started their season, kicking off with two wins and two losses. Already they have shown lots of improvement under coach Sosa. Go, Lions!

Next week, our middle school cross country team and middle school girls’ volleyball teams will be in action. Good luck to all of our middle school student-athletes competing this fall season!

The middle school and high school tennis programs will be restructured given the low turnout of participants on certain days. Coach Julie Decout and the athletics department will contact parents with the changes before the next scheduled practice on Tuesday, October 5.

No athletic programs or training will be run during October break from Friday, October 8 – Friday, October 15. Programs will resume as normal starting Monday, October 18 (just after October break).

Athletics Manager’s September 2021 Letter
As we complete a hectic month (where we launched into all of our athletic programs) and move into October and cooler weather, we would appreciate a moment of your time to read the following friendly reminders.

  1. No parents may attend any on-site games held at a LILA campus. This policy is in line with the league’s COVID-19 spectator policy. This applies to upcoming high school girls’ and middle school volleyball games. Please note that this rule also applies to the MS – FIYA league; no spectators are allowed in the gymnasium.
  2. As per the Parent Athletic Guidelines, we respectfully ask that parents who pick up their children from any training sessions on the Burbank campus remain in their own vehicles. Please refrain from speaking to your child or other student-athletes while training is in session.
  3. For any CIF league competitions and matches where spectators are allowed, specifically high school boys’ soccer, all spectators including parents, must be on the opposite side from the coaching staff. This is a CIF and league rule that needs to be respected.
  4. If your athletic program is running a carpool document, please be sure to complete it the day before any match or event. There will be 5 programs in league during this fall season and we simply do not have enough vans at the moment.
  5. All student-athletes in league who have not returned the required forms (available here) by Thursday, September 30, will not be eligible to play in any league match in October.
  6. We will be launching our new outdoor fitness and weights room early next month for high school student-athletes only. If you would like your child to be eligible to use this equipment this year, please complete this waiver without delay. More information regarding the use and scheduling of this room will be made available soon.
  7. Good luck to all of our teams and student-athletes in action this month!

We understand that these policies may seem to be frustrating, or in some cases new, however, they are dictated to us by the leagues and governing bodies that we participate in, the school COVID-19 safety guidelines and the Athletics Department Guidelines that were distributed earlier this month.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in respecting these policies and guidelines.

Athletic Parent-Coach Pre-Season meetings have been held this week. If you were unable to attend via zoom or did not receive your Coach’s Welcome Email, please email the coach of your child’s athletic program here.

The HS tennis program for Semester One is at risk of being cut due to low registration numbers. Training is on Thursdays and we need a few more registrations to keep it going. If you are interested in having your child participate, please email the athletic department directly. A refund will be issued next week to those existing families who have already registered.

Our HS Boys Soccer team have so far played in 2 league games winning both comfortably. At this stage of the season, the squad is shaping up to make a good run for the finals. Well done boys and to Coach Roman!

HS boys next game this Friday at 3:00pm vs. Pilibos. If you would like to watch and support, please find directions to Glendale Sports Complex here.

Our HS Girls Volleyball team have also begun their league season. Although they lost their first match, the girls have shown great progress with their new Coach in the little training time that they have had. There are many more games to go for the season, good luck girls! Unfortunately no spectators are allowed inside any gymnasiums with current COVID-19 restrictions, therefore for Girls HS volleyball no parents will be allowed to attend.

The MS Girls Volleyball schedule will be released early next week so please be on the lookout from your coach – games will be played in October and November.

MS & HS Cross Country – Only half of our student-athletes have returned the parent consent waiver. Without this, your child can not run outside of the school. Please be sure to hand the form either to your coach or to the athletic office (digital copy will do).

General reminder – All Parent Consent Waiver forms for all athletic programs need to be returned by the end of this month.

Wednesday, September 15, 2021

All athletic programs are now underway. If you have registered your child and have not received an official welcome email from either the Athletics Department or coach, please use our coach directory to contact the coach directly.

A reminder that all participants must complete and return the Participation and Release of Liability Waiver before the end of September 2021. You can either submit a hard copy to the coach or athletic office (digital).

Parent and student-athlete pre-season meetings will be held next week. Your coach will email you directly with the details. Although not mandatory, it is highly recommended that a parent attend. It is your chance to meet the coach and ask any questions.

Attention all high school tennis players! Our school can’t compete in any CIF league under current circumstances; however, we can enter you as individuals representing the school at regional and state events and tournaments. Please review the following information: All players must submit a letter and “brag” sheet that describes the student’s level of play and performance in outside (non-high school) USTA/SCTA tournaments. They must also submit their current UTR rating and/or USTA/SCTA rankings. All of this information should be sent to our athletics manager. Players’ information will then be submitted by the athletics manager to the CIF-SS Tennis Advisory Committee and they will make selections based upon that information for individual sectionals.

Girls: information due Monday, October 18, 2021 – regionals played in November

Boys: information due end of March 2022 – tournament play April-June

Attention all high school swimmers! Our school is not in a league where competitive swimming is offered, however, we can petition to enter our school into another league if sanctioned by the CIF. Please review the following information: There is a lot of interest regarding entering a swim team into CIF. This would only be for serious swimmers who are already training and competing outside of school. If you are interested in having your child participate in a potential LILA Lions swim team, please email our athletics manager with your child’s swimming history and current times (include stroke). This information needs to be compiled before the end of December 2021 in order to petition the CIF well before the swim season commences in February 2022.
